An Affordable McLaren: The New V8-Powered 540C Unveiled

Joining McLaren’s Sport Series, the new 540C will do 0-100km/hr in just 3.5-seconds

Only a couple weeks ago at the New York Auto Show, McLaren exposed us to their new 570S – a 3.8L V8 rocket available for under $200k, looking to compete directly with the Porsche 911.

Today at the Shanghai Auto Show, McLaren unveiled their second car to complete the two car line-up in the McLaren Sports Series: the 540C.

The idea of owning a McLaren is still foreign to most of us, but the 540C hopes to change that; the UK company is targeting this car to a new audience. But you’ll still need around $188,000US to own one.

A mid-mounted 3.8L twin turbocharged V8 coupled with the light weight carbon chassis propels the 540C from 0-100km/h in 3.5-seconds with a top speed of 320km/h, or 199mph, generating 540-hp at 7500 rpm and 540 lb.ft of torque around 3500-6500 rpm.

570S vs 540C

Compared to the larger 570S, the the 540C finds a revised design package and specific wheel design setting it apart. Plus, the damper tuning in the 540C is revised compared to the more robust 570S, allowing for more comfortable, less-stiff daily driving.

The McLaren 540C pre-orders begin now with delivery planned for early 2016. Pricing starts at approximately $188,000US (£126,000).
