Entry-level 2020 Corolla priced under $20k gets a stick shift

Next-gen sedan with looks, value, and new hybrid option

The redesigned 2020 Corolla gets a fresh look with more features. A compact sedan that’s always offered great value for the dollar, Toyota officially releases pricing for Canadian buyers, starting at C$18,900 for the Corolla L with manual transmission, topping out at C$28,490 for the Corolla XSE.

As Toyota puts it, “We’ve transformed the Corolla – including adding the first Corollas in Canada with a gas-electric hybrid powertrain and we’ve priced all models to make it easy for Canadians to take advantage of the many benefits this next-generation Corolla has to offer.”

As CVT transmissions begin taking over, it’s nice to see manual stick shifts still getting some love. It’s a rarity with new models these days but Toyota follows through with both the entry-level Corolla L but also the sportier Corolla SE, both offering the two transmission options.

Below, we price out all the 2020 Corollas (less fees/expenses; MSRP Canadian dollars), and break down what’s included with each trim level.

2020 Corolla L

Entry-level Corolla with the basics that’ll get you by. No fancy stuff like power moon roof, navigation, etc.; and wheels are smaller 15-inch steelies, but at under $20k with manual transmission, the L still offers good value.

Price: $18,900 for manual; $20,790 for CVT transmission
What it comes with:
– Powered by the 1.8L engine
– High-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (part of Standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0)
– 7-inch display with Apply CarPlay (but no Android Auto?)
– 4.2-inch multi info display
– 6 speaker audio system new for 2020
– 15-inch steel wheels
– Keyless entry
– Cloth seats inside

2020 Corolla LE

For a small premium, LE adds nice upgrades including bigger wheels, a bump in interior quality, and handy safety feature with the blind spot monitoring which is great for daily driving.

Price: $21,790 with CVT
In addition to L:
– Wheels upgraded to 16-inch steelies
– Display audio screen bumps up to 8-inches
– Toyota’s Blind Spot Monitor System
– Cloths upgraded to “premium fabric”
– Automatic A/C and electronic parking brake
– Lane Tracing Assist (automatic only) – part of the Standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0

2020 Corolla LE Upgrade Package

For an extra $2,000, this may or may not be worth the value but considering the next option up is considerably more expensive with the XLE, it comes down to how badly you want that moon roof.

Price: $23,790 with CVT
In addition to LE:
– Steering wheel is heated and wrapped in leather
– 16-inch wheels are alloy not steel
– Push button start
– Power tilting/sliding moon roof
– Power tilting/sliding moon roof

2020 Corolla XLE

XLE takes the Corolla to a premium place, where for $27k you’ve got other options in the segment. However, at this price you’re essentially getting all the goods, particularly a huge boost in the cabin with heated seats and steering wheel, and navigation.

Price: $26,990 with CVT
In addition to LE:
– 16-inch alloy wheels
– 7-inch digital speedometer
– Cloths seats get upgraded to Softex
– Heated seats both front and back
– Heated steering wheel wrapped in leather; power adjustable with XLE
– Navigation system along with Destination Assist and Safety Connect
– Power tilting/sliding moon roof

2020 Corolla SE

SE adds a new list of features. Sportier with improved driving dynamics and some distinct exterior styling tweaks, the Corolla SE gets a 169-hp 2.0L engine under the hood and significant upgrades to the cabin.

Price: $22,290 with manual; $23,290 with CVT
In addition to XLE:
– 2.0L four-cylinder engine making 169-hp
– Better driving dynamics with sport tuned suspension
– Nicer looking 16-inch alloy wheels
– Enhanced look with distinct sport front bumper and grille design
– Stick shift is enhanced: Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT)
– Bling spot monitoring
– Push button start
– Some cabin tech features include 6-speaker audio system, 8-inch display, 4.2” Multi Information Display, and voice recognition and steering wheel-mounted controls
– Premium fabric seats and automatic A/C
– Leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats

2020 Corolla SE Upgrade Package

For the extra money, this is a decent upgrade to the SE just for the larger 18-inch wheel upgrade alone.

Price: $24,290 with manual, $25,290 with CVT
Adding to the SE:
– Distinct 18-inch alloy wheels
– Heated steering wheel
– Power tilting/sliding moon roof
– Wireless charging

2020 Corolla XSE

Top-trim Corolla with just about everything for around $30,000. The XSE takes the Corolla out of the ‘affordable sedan’ range but it still offers good value at this price. If the Corolla is going to be a long-term keeper, this might be the model to pick. Plus, ambient lighting!

Price: $28,490 with CVT
Adding to the SE:
– Seat upgrade with Softex fabric and 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support
– Ambient lighting
– Heated seats both front and rear
– 7” digital speedometer
– Premium audio, Navigation Destination Assist and Safety Connect

Corolla Hybrid Pricing

If gas-powered vehicles aren’t your thing, Toyota rolls out a hybrid variant of it’s popular little 4-door, but of course, it will come at a bit of a premium. However, they come equipped with the major features you’d want, from connectivity and tech to safety and convenience.

I.e. premium fabric seats, navigation, push button start, blind spot monitoring, power adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, etc.
