The new 2016 Ford Explorer finds an even bigger EcoBoost engine option, and a new Platinum series that elevates the features and style of Ford’s iconic sport utility vehicle.

New Explorer redesign worth noting

Major design changes also serve a functional purpose in making Explorer more aerodynamic. Standard air curtains with air inlet slits integrated into the fog lamp assembly and exit slits in the front wheel wells help keep airflow close to the body, minimizing drag.

Other changes that contribute to aero efficiency include a lower, closed-off roof rack, and strakes – similar to structures mounted on aircraft to manage wind flow – integrated into the vehicle body on either side of the rear glass.

Engine options across the 2016 Explorer lineup

The 2.3-litre EcoBoost – available for the base, XLT and Limited models – is expected to deliver approximately 270 horsepower and at least 300 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 13 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, over the 2.0-litre EcoBoost.

The standard powertrain for the base Explorer, XLT and Limited models is a 3.5-litre V6 paired with a six-speed SelectShift Automatic transmission. Explorer Sport and the Platinum series will have a standard 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 – expected to be rated at 365 horsepower – mated to a six-speed SelectShift with paddle shifters.

The new Explorer will be in showrooms in 2015.
