We can never have too many 911s. Today, Porsche debuted one more: the 911 R – a 500-hp rocket as part of a limited production series paying homage to the first road-homologated race car bearing the name in 1967, where this 911 was entered in the rallies, in the Targa Florio and in world record runs. Only 991 units of the 911 R (technically coded the 991) will be produced globally. Powered by a 500-hp four-liter naturally aspirated flat-six engine (from a 911 GT3 RS) paired to a six-speed manual transmission, Porsche’s latest 911 special edition offers a systematic lightweight construction, a high level of performance, and we suspect, an unfiltered driving experience on the track. The new 911 R will sprint 0-60 miles in 3.7-seconds reaching a top track speed of 200 mph – speeds reached in part to the 911 R’s lightweight 3021 pound stance (110 pounds lighter than the 911 GT3 RS). Inside, special touches include full bucket seats with carbon fiber backrests and seat centers upholstered in houndstooth design, paying homage to the original 911 of the 1960s. A “911 R-specific” GT Sport steering wheel measuring 14.1 inches in diameter greets the lucky driver piloting this iconic coupe.
