Baselworld, one of the globe’s biggest watch and jewellery shows, just got acquainted to the latest timepiece from Porsche Design — the new 1919 Globetimer UTC built for modern travellers who have a flair for motorsports.
Fans of the 911 likely know Prof. F. A. Porsche designed the iconic sports coupe. We’re not sure they’re aware he’s been in the watch game as well since 1972, implementing the same principles from the world of motors to the world of perfectly designed timepieces.
A true forward-thinker, he was responsible for designing the first chronograph made entirely of titanium, and this new 1919 Globetimer UTC carries forward this innovative approach in blending functionality with design and timeless style.
Titanium Watch for Today’s Travellers
With its balance paced at four hertz, this titanium watch generates up to a 38-hour power reserve. It features a tripartite 42-mm titanium case along with its own ball-borne, bidirectional winding rotor.
As the name implies, the new timepiece targets globetrotters and their daily needs; hence, the engineers took a long, intensive look at the features today’s travellers seek. The ergonomically shaped, optimally positioned pusher ensures local time can be set quickly. To keep up with shifting time zones, the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ makes it easy when adding or subtracting time travelling east or west, respectively.
Unless you’re an amateur traveller who misses his flights and can’t pack an overnighter in less than an hour, misreading the time isn’t an option. Hence, watch legibility is a major factor here. Sporting a slim, titanium case paired with a cleanly designed wristband, Porsche Design ensured the 1919 Globetimer UTC time can be viewed from any angle with a fairly large and intuitive display. The contrasting colours, distinctive hands, indices and numerals combined with the generous use of nonradioactive Super-LumiNova luminous materials make misreading almost impossible.
Ad Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche would say, “If you analyze the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious.” A smart man way ahead of his time.
Price and availability
Available in four versions in Porsche Design Stores and select retailers, the 1919 Globetimer UTC World-time Watch goes on sale September 2019 priced at approximately US$6,725 (or 5,950 Euros).
