The new 2016 Camaro SS hits all the marks, from weight reduction to a stiffer body to a jump in performance numbers. Plus, some new design tweaks. Camaro fans can’t ask for more than that.
New to 2016 Camaro SS
The 2016 SS finds a long list of new features that were either unavailable in the outgoing 2015 model or were optional. The most anticipated upgrade may be the OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot – something we’ll likely see (hopefully) in every car soon.
Other new features include Driver Mode Selector with Snow/Ice, Tour and Sport modes on all models and Track mode on SS; Chevrolet MyLink with Apple CarPlay capability; Leather-wrapped flat-bottom steering wheel; and LED daytime running lamps, to name a few.
Jumping up a few years with the updated 2020 Camaro SS, gone are the SS’s staggered wheels and summer performance tires, replaced by 20-inch x 8.5-inch SS style wheels wrapped in all seasons for 2020.
The SS trim will sprint 0-60 in 4-seconds backed by 455 horsepower
Chevy claims the 2016 Camaro SS is the most powerful yet – with a 455-hp from a 6.2L V8, we’ll take their word for it. The SS sprints from 0-96 km/h (0-60 mph) in 4.0 seconds and covers the quarter-mile in 12.3 seconds when equipped with the all-new eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission. See the table below:

Less Weight, Stronger Stance
Chevy took weight reduction to new levels, spending 9 million hours of computational time looking for opportunities to make the chassis lighter and stiffer, resulting in 368 lbs. being shaved off.
According to Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer, “Every Camaro model offers exceptional chassis strength and rigidity, but the modular design made the architecture more adaptable and mass-efficient because we didn’t have to compensate for the unique demands of, say, the SS convertible when building a 2.0L Turbo coupe…
The result was an elegant engineering solution: 12 chassis components that could be combined to meet the structural requirements of each specific model without adding unnecessary mass to other models.”
