Lincoln’s full-size MKS sedan lived a short life, first arriving for 2008 until it was discontinued eight years later in 2016 due to a decline in sales. Well, we can thank the huge popularity in SUVs for that.
But was the MKS reliable? Is it worth buying used? Here, we take a closer look at the luxury 4-door’s key features including interior, horsepower, safety features, technology features, and full gallery.
The Lincoln MKS Interior
Lincoln’s are all about the lush, premium interiors. The 2009 MKS builds on this reputation with an instrument panel similar to the Navigator, MKZ sedan and MKX crossover that flows horizontally from door to door, its top portion is hand-wrapped in durable, eco-friendly leatherette with double-stitching
The steering wheel is leather-wrapped next to real wood trim up top. The flow-through center stack is topped with an integrated information screen that also serves as the screen for the available navigation system. Standard leather seats are double-stitched and feature an exclusive Lincoln perforation pattern on the inserts.
The MKS gains the softest leather ever used in a Lincoln, with leather for the seats by Bridge of Weir, the same Scottish company that supplied hides for the iconic Continental Mark II. Lincoln states much of the Ebony wood is reclaimed from other services like furniture makers. Reclaimed or not, the MKS interior is absolutely all about the next-level premium feel.
More interior space than competitors
According to Lincoln, the MKS boasts nearly four times larger space than some competitors, this includes an interior volume of 105.9 cubic feet and best-in-class luggage space of 18.4 cubic feet.
12-way power driver and front passenger seats offer four-way lumbar, and offer heated and cooled features as standard. Rear seat passengers gain the largest rear-door opening of its class.
Recessed into the front and rear door openings, cleverly designed hidden rocker panels allow for a lower step-over height, making it easier to enter or exit the vehicle. This design shields the rockers from the elements, reducing the likelihood of soiling shoes or trousers when entering or exiting the vehicle.
Lincoln MKS Horsepower & Engine
- New 3.7L V6 engine (derived from the 3.5L V6 found in the Lincoln MKX and Lincoln MKZ)
- Engine delivers 273 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque
- Lincoln MKS’s SelectShift six-speed automatic transmission is equipped with a stiffer torque converter
- All-wheel drive distributes torque between front and rear wheels
As the Car & Driver puts it in their 2009 MKS review, “Big inside, especially laterally, there’s real luxury here, a very smooth and quiet ride, good V-6 power (though we drove it solo), exceptional finish (tasteful chrome and brushed aluminum), and elegant but serious driving seats and AWD. Just one uncomfortable thought: Has the revolution come too late?”
Lincoln MKS 2009 Model’s Key Safety and Technology Features
Full-size sedans are typically built to last, with safety front and centre. Lincoln’s large MKS is no exception. For example, the car’s body structure features ultra high-strength boron steel in the B-pillar for added protection in a side impact and improves roof strength. The side impact door beams also have also been configured to provide optimal protection.
In addition a comprehensive package of active and passive safety features, including dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags, seat-mounted side air bags, safety belt pretensioners and load-limiting retractors and driver seat positioning sensor, below are some of the other safety features
Occupant Classification System | Using a sophisticated sensor, it determines via weight whether the front passenger seat is empty, occupied by a child seat or small, medium or large occupant and can deploy the air bag as needed. |
Adaptive Collapsible Steering Column | In an impact, the column will collapse, dependent on the weight and belted status of the driver. |
Safety Canopy | Ford’s exclusive side impact protection system features side curtain air bags that help protect front and rear outboard passengers in both rollovers and side impact crashes. |
AdvanceTrac | This electronic stability control system uses sensors to monitor yaw, the vehicle’s speed, throttle position and steering wheel angle and selectively applies individual brakes to help correct skids. |
Ford’s Belt-Minder | A safety belt reminder technology for the driver and front passenger that takes over after the initial safety belt reminder stops chiming. |
