Ford Ranger XLT and Lariat Channel the 1990s with New 2022 Splash Package

The Splash Package and Splash Limited Edition add some throwback vibes with 1990s-inspired graphics, black wheels, and an orange on black interior.

If you didn’t know, the 1990s are making a comeback — and Ford’s mid-size Ranger SuperCrew models optioned in the popular XLT and Lariat trim levels for 2022 are in on the action with splashy graphics, distinct wheels, and special seats, all wrapped in an orange and black look.

But this upgraded Ranger isn’t jumping on any bandwagons. The Ranger Splash was a stand-alone offering when it roamed the streets in the 1990s, first introduced in 1993 with a lowered suspension and vibrant appearance.

Well, it’s back for 2022 and and can also be combined with the off-road FX2 and FX4 packages (FX4 only in Canada) to ramp things up. As with the recent Black Appearance Package and ROUSH’s upgraded Ranger XLT, the Splash Package doesn’t touch the new Ranger’s stock 2.3L EcoBoost and 10-speed automatic transmission.

(For serious performance updates, you’ll want this Hennessey VelociRaptor Ranger with a sweet 80-hp bump over the engine’s stock 270-hp.)

New Ranger interior and exterior upgrades

The new 2022 Ranger appearance package will come in two forms: the Splash Package (priced at $1,495 and $1,700 in Canada) and the Splash Limited Edition. The former is available all year, while the latter is something Ford will be rolling out every few months in limited numbers with one-time only colours. The first of the limited series is the Splash Snow Edition.

The Splash Package doesn’t touch the Ranger XLT and Lariat’s stock 2.3L EcoBoost and 10-speed automatic transmission, but do expect a healthy dose of appearance upgrades, including:

  • Distinct 18-inch matte black wheels with a 12-spoke design
  • Front grill with orange nostrils and gloss black accents
  • Gloss black accents at the bumpers, rearview mirror caps, wheel lip mouldings, and fender vents
  • Lariat interior gets distinct seats with with orange contrast stitching and unique carbon grain with tuxedo stripes leather trim (plus orange accent stitching at the top of the dash and on the armrests, both front and rear)
  • More orange contrast stitching at the steering wheel, gear shifter, and parking brake boot

The Limited Splash Package won’t be exclusively orange and black, but expect the same sort of styling details mentioned above, along with the same 18-inch matte wheels.

Sure, the new Ranger XLT and Lariat “1990s inspired look” may not exactly capture the original Ranger Splash’s nostalgic vibes. But on its own, these packages are a great addition to a mid-size truck that has finally returned after a long hiatus.
