Audi’s R-18 Racing Series R-18 e-tron Quattro is Ready for Le Mans

A top contender in this year’s Le Mans 24 hour race, the hybrid-powered Audi R-18 e-tron Quattro looks ready

Audi-R-18-e-tron-QuattroThe Audi R-18 e-tron Quattro belongs to the series of R-18 racing cars by the German automaker.  The R-18’s are Audi’s first racing vehicles to feature hybrid technology.  The Quattro, being the newest edition to the series, possesses some very advanced features.

By combining at typically powered rear axle with an electrically powered front axle, the Audi R-18 is transformed into the Quattro which is Audi’s first racing car to not be powered completely by a combustion engine.  The Quattro’s body also is cutting edge.  To qualify for the new standards in 2014, the carriage had to be redesigned to remove any excess weight.  Unfortunately, the new hybrid engine only kicks in at speeds over 120 mph, which means that Audi could do so much more with this model if certain restrictions were not in place.

The cutting edge machinery used in the Quattro has lead to it being a leader in the field.  It has only been raced since 2012, but its Le Mans wins show that it is a force to be reckoned with.  Audi has a long tradition of fielding amazing racing craft, and the company is committed to continuing with this tradition.  This car is absolutely a top contender in this year’s Le Mans 24 hour.
