Subaru isn’t making a big deal about it, but maybe it should. The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid we recently reviewed is back after quietly disappearing a few years ago, and this time it feels like Subaru finally got it right. The last one wasn’t bad, but it didn’t give you much reason to choose it over the gas model. This one changes that. More power, better range, and fewer compromises. At the end of the day, it’s just a much more complete version of something that already worked.
It Finally Fixes the Biggest Problem
The previous Crosstrek Hybrid felt like a compromise. This 2026 one doesn’t. Power jumps to 194 horsepower thanks to a new dual-motor hybrid setup paired with a 2.5-litre BOXER engine, and that alone makes a difference in how usable it feels day to day. It’s still not quick, but it no longer feels like you’re giving something up just to save fuel. That’s really the shift, not chasing EV-level efficiency or big headline numbers, just making the hybrid version feel like the one you’d actually want to drive. If off-roading is important, go for the burlier Crosstrek Wilderness.

Still Feels Like a Subaru
Just as important, Subaru didn’t mess with the formula. Standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive stays, along with 8.7 inches of ground clearance and the same light off-road capability that’s made the Crosstrek popular in the first place. Most hybrids in this class lean toward efficiency and leave capability behind. This doesn’t. It’ll still handle winter, rough roads, and the occasional trail without much thought, which is kind of the point.
On paper, the gains aren’t dramatic; a bit more power, better fuel economy, and extended range. In real life, that adds up to something more meaningful. Fewer fuel stops, less trade-off, and a drivetrain that feels better suited to how people actually use these things. It doesn’t replace the Wilderness, and it’s not trying to be an EV alternative. But for anyone who just wants one vehicle that handles commuting, weather, and the odd weekend escape without fuss, this is the Crosstrek Hybrid Subaru should’ve built all along.
