2013 Lexus GS450h Review: A Reliable Hybrid Sedan?

Before buying a used 2013 Lexus GS450h, here’s what to know about its hybrid power, luxury features, and what still makes it worth a look.

Sure, the hybrid-powered GS450h may not be the sportiest of the GS family, including the 2013 Lexus GS350 F Sport we reviewed here, or even its bigger sibling, the LS460. But with a respectable 286-hp and 254 lb.-ft. of torque, Lexus’s luxury 4-door hauler will save money at the pump while still offering decent performance.

The 0-60 in 5.7 seconds isn’t anything to brag about; it’s fuel savings when compared to the gas-powered GS mid-size sedan models that may be something that matters to you.

Behind the wheel, the 2013 Lexus GS450h feels refined and deliberate rather than exciting. The hybrid system transitions smoothly between electric and gas power, and while the continuously variable transmission (CVT) doesn’t deliver the crisp shifts of the GS350’s traditional automatic, it suits the car’s relaxed, high-efficiency mission.

The proportions are balanced, with a low, wide stance and just the right amount of chrome detailing to look upscale without being flashy.

Acceleration is brisk enough thanks to the instant torque from the electric motor, but it’s not a car that begs to be pushed. The steering is light and accurate, body roll is minimal, and the ride quality sits firmly in that Lexus sweet spot — quiet, composed, and almost too polite. It’s more about seamless comfort than driver engagement.

Interior and Comfort

Inside, the GS450h reminds you why Lexus dominates in cabin craftsmanship. The materials are top-notch, the layout is clean, and the optional Luxury Package elevates everything further, from the heated wood-trimmed steering wheel to the 17-speaker Mark Levinson sound system that could shame most home setups.

The 12.3-inch infotainment display is still one of the largest of its era, though the joystick-style controller takes some patience. The seats offer near-endless adjustment, with deep cushioning and excellent lumbar support for long drives. Rear passengers also benefit from heated seats and their own climate controls — a rarity at this price point in 2013.

Exterior Design

The GS450h walks a fine line between executive and athletic. Its spindle grille gives it just enough edge, while the subtle hybrid badging and clean lines keep it understated. The proportions are balanced, with a low, wide stance and just the right amount of chrome detailing to look upscale without being flashy. This red-on-cream combo especially pops, giving the hybrid a touch more personality than you might expect from a Lexus sedan.
